What anime have you all been keeping up with this summer? I've been getting really into Sayonara Lara, Draw This Then Die, and Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You which have all been pretty good so far!

mushoku tensei season 3 has been hitting for me, i was not expecting a realistic depiction of polyamory instead of a typical harem.
the character development throughout this story has been so strong. i really appreciate the strong sense of mortality and mystery as well, like this season has largely just been slice of life wish fulfillment but it is given an undertone of anxiety and impermanence that i really appreciate.
definitely going to read the light novel after this season finishes its run, i'm smitten.
chainsmoker cat has been amazing, the OP gives chainsaw man with every shot showing its film brainrot, the characters are messes in both relatable and extremely funny ways. its some freakmedia in its form, like it leans on fetishes in ways i really wasnt expecting, idk its been an excellent time
GITS rules, didnt know what to expect after dandadan s2 (was worried like....maybe saru is washed, and theyre doing 2 shows in the same season....), but wow its been fantastic??? really really liking the tone, i liked how grim the oshii film was, but im loving how much time and character everyones getting?
Lara is solid, im mostly watching for how beautiful it is, its definitely a fun time.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm cour 2 continues to be excellent, its been keeping the wellwoven intrigue id expect from the fma mangaka while still having excellent tone/pacing? I loveeeeeee that were still getting longform shonen like this, really feels like a genre we'd left behind, im so so so glad to see it cx
Planning on watching:jaadugar, false memory
gotta say The Ghost in the Shell has really fed the part of my brain that wanted more Minakami Yuki circa Ch 1 & 2 of Subahibi. i think i have a type? im embarrassed by that. oh no.
I like those awkward, stilted videos from nerds who learned 3d animation when it was wizard shit. Not stuff from established studios!

Making a thread to encourage myself to read through everyone's submissions. I'm blown away at the entry count being over double last year's.

very very very much adored sicko phantasy, such a precision strike into my heart as someone who was entrenched in and has spent years pulling myself out of the dark toxic sludge of 2010s tumblr moralism and the shadow it's left looming over modern discourse. kind of evil sexual feelings towards sunny. was told my previous project helped inspire the creation of this game, which is an honor
read No Matter How Strange today, really enjoyed it in a queasy weezy kind of way. loved the harmony between the abstract aggressively tempoed visuals and the stream of consciousness prose
hole* - I hate that you can't love what I don't have, what I would give anything to have. Love bound in hate, for each other and ourselves.
has anyone read The Displacement of Water by sopy.itch.io?
>>3msbcxujdgq2z
it's my favorite game of the jam I've played so far! I loved how it plays with the concept of being objectively morally pure and how that framework can change a person. the time loop aspect is also really good and works a lot better in ren'py than I expected. also seeing that one cg of Sicil got me so badly that I had to stop playing for the day when I saw it.
sorry, https://tubitv.com/movies/100060161/pok-mon-the-first-movie but I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!
I honestly, dont know how to organize myself for threads because Im all over the place so I hesitate to call this a POKEMON thread...........

this movie rocks you're right i think mewtwo is such a good character cus he's not even really wrong about any of that stuff but also you gotta unlearn the violence sometimes
POKéMON thread? POKéMON thread!
heres my hall of fame team from my last completed play thru!
Also watched pkmn the first movie recently, starting a rewatch of the movies and possibly the show up to gen 4. Mew is so fucking cute and Team Rocket were so fun in this one!
Pacing can be shit but its AURA
Fond memories of watching that show on a Mickey Mouse CRT TV and feeling strangely nostalgic to the opening song despite being like, 5

we recently finished nadia and ended up skipping most of those eps lol, its really night and day when the regular arc picks back up again. such a lovely series overall
>>3msfg6mplfi2o
just finished it tonight and the contrast is insane. crazy to think that evangelion was originally planned as a sequel but i totally see the throughline. im really glad i finally watched it and im really glad i know i never need to watch island arc again
>>3msfi7fdw5k2x
yeah when at the very last moment they reveal that the blue water was nadia's mother the whole time i was pointing at the screen like in the image

im gonna post dubstep in this thread, you can too if you want.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1PDmi3UE5I
recently went thru d1's catalog, this track is really nuts to me cus its from 2006 but sounds like 2010-12 night slugs.
pic related its my wub bass. (or half of it.. technically i use 2 of the same synth routed to different mixer channels, 1 lowpassed at around 200hz (depending on key) for sub and one with the higher harmonics for wubs)

good morning heres a track by vaccine that i love very much. i love how crunchy her drums are but also how tranquil her compositions are. she was actually the first dubstep artist i started listening to, she was (RIP) married to ASC who i liked a lot of when i was listening to that minimal dnb /autonomic stuff a lot last year. actually its funny i didnt really appreciate that stuff much at the time, or i never felt like it clicked but now going back to it i feel like it makes a lot more sense. a lot of that scene has made dubstep too at points. in particular i really like instra:mental's dubstep stuff and ASC's stuff under intex systems
hey hey mommy's back with another vaccine trak. i had surgery today and i was listening to dubstep off painkillers for a few hrs and sounded so good... this track anaesthetic was the first joint i heard in a mix (her mix actually) and it blew my mind. i'd been djing various downtempo/idm genres for a while at 140 and i was always kinda searching across for tracks that had this melancholic/cold/ethereal vibe. when i heard this song i was like,"holy crap, this is everything ive been looking for all along". eventually i kinda pulled the thread to listening to more dubstep and its been so deep in my heart since. her music is really special to me, everytime ive spun another one of her singles it just feels like it adds a whole new dimension to her music.
anyway i rinsed all her stuff today cus the medical theme but also just felt like a treat. check it out. bass is subterranean on this one. hadal zone deep type ish. beautiful music. hope yall are well
pretty much all u need

weird one that i find addicting
what the fuck yall know about this
still to this day the most ruthlessly kinect and tonally intense rpg to date, plus my favorite hitoshi sakamoto ost by a mile

i have a copy of this sitting around somewhere i want to get to at some point. it was super panned when it came out from what i recall which now makes me interested in what it's deal is.
i like when rpgs do weird shit
>>3mqplpng7bk2v
it's one of those games where the typical type of Database Animal Fan Guy really despises it, much like MGS2 it very deliberately avoids fulfilling several consumer chauvinist expectations about what An Entry In This Franchise is 'supposed' to be so the loudest people in the room just sophmorically rejected it. nobody i've ever spoken to who very vocally hates it/regards it as having Killed The Series has ever played it to a person lmao.
it's a real shame to me that the Vocal Consumers of the world are so averse to games where softlocking is even a distant possibility, i feel like that kind of permanent consequence looming overhead is one of those things that will give a game actual atmosphere and gravity. games designed to be impossible to fuck up at even a little feel like they can only access the same part of the brain as Poser3d hentai lol. that said! this game's reputation has been steadily improving in alt jrpg circles since ps2 emulation got really good and it feels like it has a more active image as a beautifully paced experimental dungeon crawler with engaging overworld mechanics than as like, The Great Ruiner (i've never played 4 and i want to give it a real chance but i have heard consistently that 4 was actually the mortal blow and is like, full of minigames to an offputting degree)
do i need to play the other breath of fires before this one or can i breathe right in
you definitely don't need to play any other bof games to play dragon quarter! it's self-contained and easily the best in the series, i love it so much. one of the early 21st century's great works of art imo.
I've been watching my sister play this occasionally, she's still very early but it is very sick seeing an RPG almost structured like a survival horror game, tricks and traps and ambushes and resource management and limited saves. She was 3 hours past her last save when we got to a room with 3 ant enemies, she manages to kill them and then turns around just to get chased by a massive boss ant. we all scream cuz its essentially a jumpscare, once she's in battle she has no recovery items or anything, she manages to get it with a bomb, Lin and Ryu eventually die. All Nina can do is set up some barriers and One lightning spell and pray. i forget exactly how it went down but she got the ant dead with a hail mary and if the encounter had gone any differently she'd be dead that turn. we cheered
I come back to XY every couple years to see if I enjoy it, but every play through I do is so miserable. I want to like it, but I can't help but see this game as the origin of many of the worst decisions GameFreak never walked back from.
Ultimately, I think its mostly that going full 3D was a complete mistake that just revealed how often they cut corners, and things have only gotten lazier and buggier since.

>>3mqnzrhmu3q2k
oh absolutely, and i think this extends heavily to things like the battle animations, too. it didnt matter that the pokemon didnt move with attacks or that some animations were so vague, nothing else was very literal.
Stylistically its so nothing now.
i really hated XY but Sun/Moon is one of the best modern entries even though it carries over a lot of the issues that started to get solidified in The Template in XY
>>3mqnnolj64z2u
yeah it sucks. heard through the grapevine some years back that the 3d direction was pushed onto the team at game freak (who largely weren't experienced 3d artists) and unfortunately it sold better than ruby/sapphire/emerald, black/white (sequels also) and firered/ leafgreen sort of setting the trajectory from that point onwards given the unfortunate consumer demands. i do think they managed to fix a lot of the problems with sun and moon but they were still expected to chase the current console fidelity from then on.
this is the best pokemon game because i can pet and feed any pokemon i want...i remember that being my favorite thing about the game
i promised myself that i would stop arguing/complaining about nu-pokemon on the internet because i didnt like that i was being lumped in with the annoying dexit guys. but i still think xy onwards sucks booty... artstyle down the gutter. respect to the team cranking these games out but god i cannot bring myself to care
what cool movies have you been watching recently? i'll start.
les abysses, aka the depths, by nikos papatakis. based on the IRL case of the papin sisters in france. utterly bleak and immiserating movie. some of the grimiest and yuckiest sets i've ever seen in a 60s film. more of the dialogue is screamed than it's actually spoken. easily one of my fav first watches of the year. was very cathartic to attend a screening immediately after a nightmare retail shift.

yeah its a letdown i appreciate with hypercube and such the wackiness kind of makes up for any disappointment
>>3mr4nxo3pcy2o
>the northman (first watch, eggers is hit or miss for me and i didnt like this one. i appreciate the attention to detail but it just felt totally unsuited to film as a medium)
i feel like the northman is kind of a reddit history memes movie but i don't want to make anyone feel bad for liking it smiles
when i watched it for the second time i just couldn't get it out of my head that it felt so chuddy, and it made me start thinking that eggers makes kind of conservative stories even though he's probably some type of liberal. i rly like the vvitch but it kind of plays a good vs evil story with corruption horror pretty straight, like the forces of corruptive evil do win in the end but to me that comes off even more conservative in some ways haha. i think the vvitch is a good conservative story though.
recently i saw a pedro costa short i'd never seen, tarrafal (2007), in preparation for a local screening of his incredible, haunted/haunting feature colossal youth (2006) at the end of august, and my friend kelley dong showed me his new short, letter to sirius, which was gorgeous and inspiring. i'm also still intermittently poking at my essay on mizoguchi's genroku chushingura/the 47 ronin (1941) which i watched at the beginning of the month, i'm trying to tease out how its style fosters a non-cathartic critical reflexivity that runs counter to its dictated role as wartime propaganda.
>>3ms2w4w7z7a2z
would love to read that essay if/when u finish it, i need to get around to the 47 ronin at some point
we rewatched the phantom menace last night. i probably havent seen in it about 20 years and honestly was sort of expecting to enjoy it (perhaps im too susceptible to critical re-evaluations). anyway it was dogshit. pretty much every decision the film makes (from line-reads to blocking to pacing) is totally baffling, but theres way too much tie-in merchandise pandering for it to feel intentionally alienating, its just two hours of bad acting and windows vista screensavers
>>3ms2svivt572c
yeah wrt the northman i think that the point of the film's narrative is basically "death and disaster are the natural consequences of a culture that prizes honor above all else" whereas the visual language the movie uses to depict amleth's subconcious is like "epic credit card commerical for the white birth rates rewards program," and the ending taps into the latter not the former
tsukumizu's new manga has started serialization
https://mangadex.org/chapter/ded552b5-36de-425c-8d16-364cb5ad06c8
all hail tsukumizu!
tkmiz's previous releases, girls last tour and shimeji simulation both followed a small core cast of characters for the entire time. as the title and opening illustration suggest, we're going to see different aspects of the megastructure in each chapter. i really did like the two in the first chapter but i don't think we'll see them again
I really enjoyed what has been published so far.
I've never been assigned to a submarine, but I have been assigned to a very small DDG during my time in the Navy, and it struck me as very well crafted. I can tell when an Author has researched their work very well by how it matches with my lived experiences, sometimes.
Girls' Last Tour was excellent, and I'm wondering what sort of very human and very empathetic pains will emerge from a tale fundamentally concerned with a culmination to war.
These days, it feels tragically relevant.
Anyways, I am going to be thinking about Canned Universe for a long time.
wahoo new chapter.. i really liked it!
thematically this seems to lead to humanity inventing the simulation program where shimeji simulation takes place? there was someone who looked a lot like majime at the end o-o
Got my copy of The Tick, looking forward to Arthur getting his own figure. Still need to watch the 2001 series with Patrick Warburton.

> Sakuga (作画) (lit., "drawing pictures") is a term used in anime to describe moments in a show or movie when the quality of the animation improves drastically, typically for the sake of making a dramatic point or enlivening the action....
sakugabooru a useful resource to find interesting sequences, tagged by keyword: https://www.sakugabooru.com/
do you have a favorite animation sequence or animator?
ping pong (2014) is one of my favorite anime overall with plenty of memorable and unique animation. this was directed by masaaki yuasa (kaiba, mind game, tatami galaxy, crayon shin-chan) with many famous episode directors putting their own spin on this amazing adaptation. yuasa's trademark style is for characters to warp and deform, and his influence can be seen here as well
ping pong portrays movement so beautifully and stylishly - its a hard hitter on all fronts for me https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/308787
one of my favorite cuts of animation period - from gurren lagann. that mother fucker just walks out of his mech and across to end their stalemate of a battle to personally beat the shit out of simon. what is there to not like about that?
presumed by the legendary yoh yoshinari who was key animator on neon genesis evangelion, dead leaves mahoromantic, flcl, diebuster, kill la kill. too many to list really...
