i would really like to get better about avoiding nostalgia bias while not discarding like 'past wisdom' or whatever, either as a creator or an audience. i want to be able to like, distill lost essences i come across and put them into my own taste and work but really understand like, what got passed over by the march of time instead of just dipping into this well of comfort/familiarity over and over again.

i go back to old things i have loved and sometimes they suck, but sometimes they are really good. and part of me is like... well. that's nostalgia. obviously i dont want to be hypervigilant about it to my detriment but you see enough examples of people whose tastes crystalize and then never develop further and i'd hate for that to be me. it's boring and like, i don't know, you can see how it informs a lot of peoples' worldview - everything was better when i was a coddled ignorant child unaware of the world's problems.

on the other hand every now and then i'll play an old game i never played before and there's often something special about it. or like, idk, i played super metroid for the first time a few years ago and it's good. like wow. well loved SNES game is good i guess. but also: some of this is surely just a general nostalgia for a time period or a vibe that i enjoyed and am now drilling into.....

i wouldn't say it's a crippling compulsion, but it's often in the back of my mind. i guess it's a similar impulse to wanting to avoid popular things so that you can seek out things that are less explored. it can be good, but then also, your values can start getting a bit warped, seeking novelty over actually taking time to understand things ...

it all feels a bit stupid. i value being precious about this sort of thing but then i also feel like maybe i'd just be better off otherwise lol. i don't ever want to have too big an ego about this stuff, but, but...

what helped for me was to realize i could decouple the feeling of nostalgia from the object its directed at. whether its a childhood favourite that sucks or a childhood favourite that rules, i find more value in holding onto my experience and memories of the thing rather than the thing itself. i mean, art is such a mercurial phenomenon. it feels like every time i return to something i enjoyed before, whether it was 10 days or 10 years ago, it's a completely new experience. and more often than not, my opinion is especially coloured by the context i experienced it in (example: i feel little nostalgia for SimCity Creator on the Wii, but lots of nostalgia for playing it in my mom's old living room).

idk. i get the fear of falling into the trap of comfy insularity too, but i don't see a reason to be afraid of your taste crystallizing unless you're really just dedicated to passive consumption and hostile to any alternative. in truth, we all gotta find our own middle path between permanent novelty and permanent familiarity. the best thing to me isn't just to have lots and lots of new experiences, or a bunch of old experiences frozen in time, but to have a unique set of experiences built over a lifetime. of well-trodden classics and newer boundary-pushing works and even all the awkward outdated memories that still linger. it's cultivating that shameless eclecticism that counts the most i think.

i dunno if this makes sense or if i'm just rambling bcuz it's late and i'm high, but this is how i like to think about it at least.

all this has really shifted for me as i've gotten older. i don't know exactly when but i feel like i understand art and stories so much more than i did 10 years ago

>>3msd6jyudb226
yeah it is about the path i guess right? like you're building a unique experience as a human and there are lots of ways to do that

Brands and media companies appeal to nostalgia for nostalgia's sake... I'm as sick as anyone of "remember this movie? what if we remade it?". But at the individual level, looking back on old books/games/movies, I'd rather think of it as thoughtful retrospection; I find that meeting with old favorites becomes an interesting exercise when you consider that something – yourself – has changed since the last time you met. It's splitting hairs... but I feel like nostalgia is to drag old things into the present unchanged whereas retrospection is to bring yourself back to those old things and see in them something new. The market pandering to nostalgia builds a lot of cynicism in me but I don't want to apply that same cynicism to my own interaction with past works.

Italo Calvino: "For the fact is that the reading we do when young can often be of little value because we are impatient, cannot concentrate, lack expertise in how to read, or because we lack experience of life. This youthful reading can be (perhaps at the same time) literally formative in that it gives a form or shape to our future experiences, providing them with models, ways of dealing with them, terms of comparison, schemes for categorising them, scales of value, paradigms of beauty: all things which continue to operate in us even when we remember little or nothing about the book we read when young. When we reread the book in our maturity, we then rediscover these constants which by now form part of our inner mechanisms though we have forgotten where they came from. There is a particular potency in the work which can be forgotten in itself but which leaves its seed behind in us... For this reason there ought to be a time in one’s adult life which is dedicated to rediscovering the most important readings of our youth. Even if the books remain the same (though they too change, in the light of an altered historical perspective), we certainly have changed, and this later encounter is therefore completely new."

I do like your idea of trying to find out what it is about past art that gave it a certain feel, rather than just believing that it was inherently better. Putting actual thought and dissecting your favorite books, movies, albums, etc. could help you put words to your tastes and as a result help you find more new things that you'd like too.

That's something that I think separates people who are stuck in the past, versus people who just like to visit it for the experience. People who tend to be obsessed with nostalgia only ever talk about how things were better back then, and suck now without diving into why any further than "it had soul." They're usually just passive consumers who are put off from trying anything new, simply because it's unfamiliar to them. Once you start to find out the parts you do like from past media, you can easily find artists/authors who are inspired by them or replicate a certain feel without it being a direct rip-off of the original.

Incidentally, I think anyone who is looking for an opponent could benefit from a thread that does this but my friend Tamago is a tournament-level player and has been looking for an opponent, but is kind of shy about the idea of using an imageboard.

I'd asked him if he'd be comfortable with me putting up a little flier, and he said he'd appreciate that.

He plays Guilty Gear Xrd and Accent Core +R, but also Melty Blood.

You can hit him up at "tamagogangan" on BlueSky or Discord.

Something like this?

I'm speculating still that the small dots might be numbers; if they are, small dots in the center of the Semaphore Position might denote "Number" too - I've noticed that, at least in this transmission, the dot is only in letters 1-9 and 0.

Unfortunately, that doesn't explain what the struck circles are, so maybe I'm wrong here.

Notably, "Bravo-Zulu" or BZ is usually semaphore for "Congratulations" or "Good Job".

Potential for one of the bottom bullets, which seems to just be "BZ" to essentially be "Congrats".

File: marine-signal-flag-letter-b-bravo-30254221361316.progressive.jpg (59 kB, 1024x1024)

I doubt it will be relevant, but the other half of Semaphore was Pennant Code - just in case we need it, it's here for reference.

... I was puzzling about this in bed this morning realized the file is named "Basic Arithmetic" and so, I've probably got this inside out, and this is a set of small math-problems.

I think I've got it inside out, and these letters are predominantly their semaphore number equivalents.

It occurs to me I misidentified 'Golf' as 'Zulu'.

Is that 5 A 5 with "A" as a shorthand for 'Addition'?
5+5?

7 D 3 with "D" (or maybe zero?) as a shorthand for 'Division'?
7 / 3?
7 0 3 ?

I haven't figured out the branching mid-link dots; if it's mirroring the semaphore position, the linking dots might be '12' and '3'

3 (some sort of branching operation symbol involving '12' and '3') = 9 ?

Maybe it is appending extra numbers to a lead number, and it's 312 or 33?

I think the bottom row is:
2 7 6 4 or perhaps 2 7 6 0 .

1 (some sort of branching operation symbol involving '18' (?) and '2'(?) ) concluding in an arrow?

The last symbol, 'H'/'8' with three terminating branches leads me to believe the 'x's may represent a zero value or something.

Maybe that's 8,000?

after 28 years of being alive i finally cracked the secret to soft skin. what they were saying about skincare products really does work. i feel like i look to most of the cosmetics industry with scorn? it's a little too much effort all told and it's best to not overwhelm yourself with tasks.(´ー`)

what is your routine? do you consider yourself pretty? do you bother with the make ups? how do you make it easy for yourself if so?

this was my experience for sure - i consider myself relatively diligent with hygiene. i wash my bed sheets regularly and do most of the things 'beauty influencers' say will give you glowing but in reality but it took some very specific incantations for my skin to not be perpetually irritated. so much of it is genetics...

>>3mrdvyyrkiq22
v true. it is a perpetual effort to craft one's appearance and even if u can learn to be comfy presenting a certain way it's a lot of effort. i think there is somewhere a nice middle ground in terms of effort v result, but i have yet to reach it.

>>3mrdvyyrkiq22
not saying it's necessarily the same for you, that discomfort might very well be due to a genuine discordance you feel with that kind of femininity. but nothing feels immediately natural to anyone, it always takes time and work for a way to be to become one's normal and discomfort in the intervening period is totally normal.
personally, i was using this sort of "this is not for me" reasoning as a way to cope with my anxiety with going through that period for a long time and it's set my personal development back by several years. but it's just how i am now and im very glad i was eventually able to make it through that.
this may or may not be the case for you, and it's totally fine if it isn't, but i want to make sure that seed is planted in ur head so that in the event that you are going through something similar to me my experience can serve you. (ftr im far from hyperfeminine and there are a lot of traditionally feminine things i dont do, it doesnt mean one has to go "all the way" so to speak)

>>3mqwicb3mt22x
i know what u mean i just see people do like a million products sometimes and i think basic stuff works better for some people
like obviously if that doesn't work it doesn't but i worry some people are overdoing it

>>3mrftz7ws7m2j
oh absolutely, even in the case that you have specific skincare needs (and that is most people, i dont know the actual stats there but neutral skintype is definitely less than half of people), they will be served by a couple things that best cater to your needs and u dont rly need anything more than that + moisturising + a healthy lifestyle.

skincare brands are kind of a problem here though (and it's even worse for haircare) because they dont do anything to dispel all the common myths around skincare and will even use them as marketing tactics (common one for haircare is advertising a product as moisturising when that is precisely what a haircare product shouldnt do unless it's for ur scalp, none of those products actually moisturise but they still say they do).

so for the average person that thought process that should work of trying a product that is advertised as targeting your problems, seeing it doesnt work as well as you expected, piling on another such product hoping itll do more, and so on and so on, doesnt actually end up working at all lol
it's only when u know exactly what active ingredient you need that you can really achieve that

thx for sharing that segment - i found many of the stills for this BOO(?) chara so im so happy to see the animation parts too - this artist has me by the balls - ive already known since midori I saw when younger - but i connected to their political nature this past two days... his work has strong messages, and he's brave to stand strong and be resistant to what he perceives as nefarious forces in the world - rejecting censorship and downvoting fascism - in my books honorable causes with tangible sacrifice -

im copy pasting this from one of his websites that resonates with me

Harada draws on thin paper. He outlines the paper with a pigmented water-based pen and then colors it with paint or design markers. This has been his consistent approach since his first work, "Weak Dinosaur-chan" (1976), when he was 14 years old, to the present.
Thin paper curves when colored.
When he was a lecturer at an art university, a student asked him, "How do I film curved paper?"
In commercial animation, the paper is held down from above with a transparent, non-reflective glass.
However, this increases the filming effort.
He also read an interview with an American cinematographer who said, "Placing a filter or something between the camera lens and the subject will, technically, blur the image."
To that end, Harada places weights of about 10 books on the warped paper for a day.
However, the paper still sometimes warps. Paper is as tough as a weed.
For this reason, the Kiryukan filming stand has low-adhesion double-sided tape attached to all four corners.
But even so, the paper is still warped.
However, this results in natural textures, noise and shadows, which leads to the assertion that the images were drawn by hand and photographed by a human being, not a machine.
The act of actually creating something with your hands has a positive psychological effect and has long been used in cognitive therapy and other methods.

when i was a kid, i remember being asked what i wanted to be when i grew up, and what my favorite color was. to the former i would answer "accountant", to the latter i would say "nothing" or "manila". they were the most generic answers i could think of, which was kind of a joke to me but definitely also some kind of performative (though sincere) ennui, with also some sense of resentment towards my environment. i think i was often frustrated and upset but too cowardly to face the adults in my life with outright hostility, so i'd just try to do things that would make them feel bad. later in high school i'd end up taking an accounting class, so i suppose at some point it stopped being a joke as i started believing my own non-answers in search of an identity. according to my mom, i used to be very rowdy as a child (eg my mom recalls one day where she was sitting in the living room watching tv and i stood in front of the tv with a lightbulb in each hand and smashed them together) but after the first day of kindergarten i became the quiet child i would be for the rest of my life. i often wonder what happened that day, but i have no clue. i think it's possible it was just a normal first interaction with becoming a social being (though, i was in preschool before and had a sister) and i decided or made the indecision to internalize and perform

do you still feel a pressure to conform or have you found a way out

i still struggle with avoidant behavior but i've felt like less of a husk within the past few months. when i was 18/19 i thought i was going to escape my malaise with prescription drugs but none of that really turned out, i'm getting therapeutic treatment for borderline now which i think has helped. i also think pursuing irl relationships has helped me in some ways, as it's less feasible to maintain a persona that's contradictory with your mannerisms and relationship to your body and whatnot compared to online where you get to be an avatar that produces text, though obviously this doesn't mean there's no masks we wear in social situations, in fact they can be more subtle and insidious. but yes i think i've been getting better \(^o^)/

i feel like i've been able to work through most of my aspie issues and i'm a fairly functional member of society overall. i can get and stay employed, and i can make friends. HOWEVER i can't tolerate strangers at all. i find small talk exhausting, and i find that in most conversations i hit a ceiling. if i go any deeper most people just don't seem interested to continue or are not sure what to say, and the conversation dies out. some things that work with others just don't seem to ever work with strangers. i can't befriend them. if this is as deep as it gets, i'm not sure i want to?

i feel unfulfilled! are most people just uninteresting? where are all the vibrant people hiding? am i just bad at showing my good sides to others? am i really just unskilled at social life? do you have any similar anecdotes or issues?

when i referred to strangers i think i narrowed the scope a bit too much. i have this issue even with people i consider my friend. it is to a lessened degree of course, we get along. but i'm still an alien. i contort myself and nothing feels quite natural.

as a result, i look at envy with how many people are satisfied with what they have. and sometimes normie strangers, well something about their way of life seems enviable. i figured i should try. surely there has to be some way for me!

>>3mqupggfata22
>i can't tolerate strangers at all. i find small talk exhausting, and i find that in most conversations i hit a ceiling.
could you give us specific examples of these scenarios? like, people you've met, what circumstances you met them, and how the interactions went?

for me, i work at an VR amusement place, my job is like an escape room host where I brief people and monitor their games but beyond that I don't have to get very in-depth and in that circumstance, yeah, people generally don't go into their passions or interests even when asked and can sometimes seem disinterested in talking, but I think the situation that they're being engaged in and the dynamic between us plays a big factor. Contrast that with my younger years, where I went to a few house parties where people would just spill their guts about all sorts of stuff.

File: tomokarina.jpg (40.4 kB, 736x831)

>>3mqushcwzyu22
expanding from what others have said, i don't think you're "missing out" on much of anything. most of the time, those strangers are in the same boat too. either living in the small sphere of people and things they connect with, or surrounding themselves with lots and lots of acquaintances, or somewhere between. i get how that yearning for connection can be, wanting that ephemeral secret to belonging that it seems like everyone else has, but i don't know. there isn't really one. we're all just kinda carving out our own ways to belong, even normies do it.

i still feel that FOMO pain sometimes too but idk. i have my wife. i have a handful of close friends. it's not much but it's more than enough for me.
