I come back to XY every couple years to see if I enjoy it, but every play through I do is so miserable. I want to like it, but I can't help but see this game as the origin of many of the worst decisions GameFreak never walked back from.
Ultimately, I think its mostly that going full 3D was a complete mistake that just revealed how often they cut corners, and things have only gotten lazier and buggier since.
i liked it when i was a kid so dont tell me its the nostalgia goggles making everything post gen 5 seem bad. ive been replaying black 2 and it absolutely holds up
it really sucks that black and white landed on a really immaculate and crisp artstyle that was genuinely IMMEDIATELY torpedoed in favor of like ugly fox kids Cubix 3D. this is exactly where i stopped following pokemon as a kid lol

it really managed to get the best of both worlds, didnt it?
the sprite work STILL looks better than the current 3d models do, and the 2d animations had a lot of personality the 3d ones dont. considering how little they take advantage of the change and how bad they are at it i often wonder why they did it at all, other than the at that point dying doctrine that any game that CAN be 3d MUST be 3d.

it's representative of a very classy low poly with sprites look that i mostly associate with really chiq looking ds games, it still puts a lot of grody looking HD2D games to shame. i feel like pokemon games held the most aesthetic curiosity when they were highly abstracted and representative more than literal. they used to work more in implications, you'd have a dozen buildings and some road tiles and that would imply a big city or something, the more they prioritize Literally Creating And Simulating The Most Immersive Realistic Environment Possible the more they discard the really impressive way the earlier games actually engage your imagination by speaking more in the visual language specific to video games. sacrificing that on the altar of "pokemon spaces look like real life now!!" is sooooo so deeply boring.

oh absolutely, and i think this extends heavily to things like the battle animations, too. it didnt matter that the pokemon didnt move with attacks or that some animations were so vague, nothing else was very literal.
Stylistically its so nothing now.
i really hated XY but Sun/Moon is one of the best modern entries even though it carries over a lot of the issues that started to get solidified in The Template in XY

yeah it sucks. heard through the grapevine some years back that the 3d direction was pushed onto the team at game freak (who largely weren't experienced 3d artists) and unfortunately it sold better than ruby/sapphire/emerald, black/white (sequels also) and firered/ leafgreen sort of setting the trajectory from that point onwards given the unfortunate consumer demands. i do think they managed to fix a lot of the problems with sun and moon but they were still expected to chase the current console fidelity from then on.
this is the best pokemon game because i can pet and feed any pokemon i want...i remember that being my favorite thing about the game
i promised myself that i would stop arguing/complaining about nu-pokemon on the internet because i didnt like that i was being lumped in with the annoying dexit guys. but i still think xy onwards sucks booty... artstyle down the gutter. respect to the team cranking these games out but god i cannot bring myself to care
