got my hands on this today. An unreleased beat by TK i was told was composed on a commodore64- I could go forever abt tk (tuxedo kamen one of his many aliases) so I'll try keep it short. The sp-forums in response to the beat scene created their own sound - emotionally I believe was partly a rebellion to be rejected by the los angeles clique that had already formed/hardened - SP SOUND was heavily influenced by the wutang instrumental - they married the instrumental with noise / arcade game sound-

example of early TG noise x boom bap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v73DIoQRKUQ

and another: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPzR0GIV9HA

it's complex and imposs I can trace things exactly - but culp brought to the table the idea of sampling/stealing charas from CHASING GHOSTS documentary abt arcade celebrities- which lead to the TG tape. They already were using names of chara from media- but this became a system of presenting a media that had a cast - meta narrative and theme - which let the producers choose their chara like from a fighting game. A formula that could work with any media, not just kungfu shawbrother films.

I perceive these small group of anon posters were unusually experimental and abrasive - it lead to a climax beat tape "twin galaxies" - as I saw it - this SP BEAT TAPE formula was perfected - traits being short , less than 1 min beat - stealing the faces of pop culture chara in media - loops - acapella samples - lofi as fuck - comedic af- dirty and muddy. There was some interest in music theory and synths keys - but most of the compositions that came out of this scene were fairly simple- chords, bass, simple melodies. It could have seemed perhaps, that it didn't require skill to produce these tapes - but in the end it was fairly elaborate from a few sonic point of views - sound design - musicianship - and composition.

On some level it shared structural similarities to dubstep - which was about build up - drops - and sample hits.

This is abit of a personal take - I haven't kept up with any music journalism - but related to this whole surge of interest in sample driven beat music - the key question became where do you get good samples? And effectively, aside from youtube digging, there are so many unsung heroes bloggers, rippers, and pirates who around this same time period were putting in herculean efforts to get-study, dig up -rare old records and put out onto the net (for free dl) - I feel that, they were directly influencing many genres of music- and giving a large scores of music nerds an education - examples, like hatembargo for shaw brothers research - or holywarbles blog which got taken down by mediafire - and boxes of toys - there was a HUGE network of rippers and diggers who were giving the internet some serious cultural power and depth - I think, its unfortunate that most of these hard working passion heads had to get their websites and efforts scrubbed and policed by capitalism... unsung hero shit to me - yet they themselves didn't produce any music usually - they still played a key role in choosing, shaping, and bringing wealth to the new waves. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a form of pattern that will repeat itself - with collectors/diggers essentially giving up their life for this selfless job. IG, the tl;dr, my take is, diggers/rippers/posters deserve acknowledgement for their role in music history... but it seems, due to the underground nature that fringed on the illegal / copyright violation side - it seems like they get the short end of the stick.

goes hard, lots of the stuff youve sent me from here over time stays in my rotation.. i like the commodore sound, i downloaded a funkot pack a long time ago that had a bunch of c64 samples in there and that ive been kicking around for ever . drums in this song for example are most ly them but i clip em down to just a few ms and spam em. like u said here >>3mqqos7ifjc2v
big up to the diggers/sampleshare crowd

i wish i could get a more sp like setup when i make beats. i really idealize the fantasy of making a beat tape in a few days or whatever but i think me and fl just end up being more of a deep-editing workflow most of the time... i work on tracks for weeks most of the time. but something immediate can produce sm interesting sounds so quickly, its fun to see waves like this come and go...

it's sort of the creator/consumer dynamic and the property relations that nominally exist to prop up the creator side... we create to have work that can be interacted with but what that can mean is constrained.
